Origins and perspective about racing at Laguna Seca
The new Tudor United Sports Car Series sanctioned by IMSA visits Mazda Laguna Seca Raceway for the first time. A GM factory team fields two C7.R Corvettes in the GTLM class, (GT2, in former ALMS); and four independent Corvette teams race spec chassis in the “P” class, (Daytona Prototypes in former Grand-Am Series).

Sports car racing began in the US on airport runways and closed off public road circuits. Faster cars and rising fatalities shut them down. Racing exhibitions persist today through the streets and roads of Watkins Glen NY, Bridgehampton NY, Elkhart Lake WI, and Pebble Beach CA. Laguna Seca opened in 1957, replacing Pebble Beach with a dedicated track carved on a hillside that served as a wartime artillery range on the Fort Ord US Army base. Now surrounded by upscale housing developments, Mazda Laguna Seca Raceway survives as the longest continually operating road racing track on the West Coast. The scariest part of the circuit was re-configured in 1988, for safety reasons again. Many of us associate Laguna Seca with the legendary Can Am Series in the mid-‘60s and the wildly popular Monterey Historic Races started by Steve Earle in 1974. Few places today offer both first class racing and exceptional tourism. Just hold onto your wallet at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion weekend. Crowds have grown out of proportion and people have been turned away.
