Two top Corvette vintage racers face off at INDY

Rivalries spice up Vintage Racing, just like MLB (Yanks vs Red Sox), NCAAM (Duke vs UNC) and more.

The latest to surface is between Corvette racers Scott Borchetta from Nashville TN USA and Peter Klutt from Halton Hills Ontario CANADA.

Since around 2008, Klutt beat all comers in this 1969 big block Corvette he cleverly built from parts.  His latest, shown above as # 59A he calls the “Old School Corvette race car” is really a wolf in sheep’s clothing.  Klutt and Al Unser Jr were the team to beat in Pro-Am competition that was once the centerpiece at SVRA’s INDY Invitational races.

More recently, Scott Borchetta acquired and upgraded a Corvette shown above as # 1.  It was built in 1969 by the same crew that built two of the winningest Corvettes in history for the Owens Corning racing team.  This car was ordered by a Pan Am pilot named Curt Wetzel to race in Germany, brought back to life in its original purple, blue and white paint job.

The two had not faced off until June 2022 at INDY.   Borchetta prevailed by a slim margin, powered by a very strong 350 cubic inch motor.  Both are talented drivers with the resources and “know-how” to win.  We hope there is more to come.

# 9 Tom Weglarz was a full 4 seconds back in his red/orange big block 1969 coupe.

Followed a further 6 to 9 seconds back by # 64 Jim Heck, # 8 JP Griffith and # 44 George Wright in small block Corvettes.

In Group 10, Zach Arnold from nearby Tiffin OH raced this 2005 # 55 C6 ZO6 he originally ran in the ROLEX Grand Am Sports Car Series.

Fans were treated to an early version replica of Zora’s CERV 1 (Chevrolet Experimental Racing Vehicle).
