Corvette Racing takes its eye off the ball at Road America
“Keep your eye on the ball” if you want to win. It seems the Corvette Racing Team lost sight of that lesson, first by squandering GTLM pole position earned by Jordan Taylor.
Two hours and forty minutes later found both the # 3 and # 4 C8.R GM-backed Corvettes losing to the # 79 WeatherTech Porsche 911 RSR-19.
The privateer Porsche with just one pro-rated driver, Matt Campbell, won the race vs two pro drivers for each Corvette.
What else happened? Corvette Racing opted early for split strategies with neither playing out; while the Porsche went with 2 stops and conserved enough fuel to win. Antonio Garcia # 3 Corvette said the early call simply did not pay off.
The # 4 Corvette received a drive thru penalty after Tommy Milner spun the wheels on the air jacks while work was still being done. So maybe there was some lack of focus?
And maybe there were some distractions. Keeping your eye on the ball means the next race comes first. Instead, it seems the team was focused on test day in France and the 24 hours of Le Mans they had to sit out last year.
With just a three-day turnaround between Road America moving everything to France, the Team built a fifth chassis to get ready.
They also kept testing the low-downforce kit for the C8.R’s debut at Le Mans. Did you know that lights now warn the driver for tire lock-up and tire slippage?
