Callaway Competition scores 8th in race 2 at Sachsensring
The team arrived at Sachsensring hoping for a better result but after early testing, eighth place was not so bad considering as follows:
The scramble to repair the car from a near catastrophic fire at Lausitzring.
Over the years, the Corvette C7 GT3-R has not been at its best at Sachsenring. Practice was good but then the handling fell off to no avail, despite continued adjustments.
And the incredibly close competition with less than a full second separating the fastest lap time recorded by the winner.
Race 2 was won by the # 13 AMG GT3 Evo piloted by Jules Gounon (a former winner with Callaway in 2016) and Igor Jakob Walilko, a promising young Polish driver.
The team was somewhat more tentative approaching Saturday, finishing 15 th in Race 1 on Saturday.
Race 1 winner was the # 92 Porsche 911 GT3-R of Mathiew Jaminet (has co-driven in the IMSA WeatherTech series) and Michael Ammermuller.
This 16-minute video (in German) features driver Marvin Kirchhofer, team principal Ernst Woehr and others and 12 minutes from the start we see the fire.
Callaway Competition is eighth in the driver standings going into the final two races at Hockenheim on October 23-24 and then Nov 6-7 at the Nurburgring (re-scheduled from July (served as flood disaster recovery base).
