Alternate strategies and luck play out at Road America
Corvette fans have embraced this picturesque historic 4-mile circuit for years however the Corvette Racing Team had not been doing all that great.
The outcome improved on Sunday Aug 5, # 4 with Oliver Gavin & Tommy Milner finishing 2nd,
And # 3 Antonio Garcia and Jan Magnussen finishing 3rd.
During their opening stint both Corvettes gained a spot to second and fourth before stopping for fuel and tires. That’s when strategies came into play as a result of five (5) caution flag periods.
When starter Garcia handed off to Magnussen after 40 minutes, Magnussen re-entered the race in 6th. During Magnussen’s ensuing stint, the # 3 team opted for more stops before Garcia got back in with about 80 minutes left.
Meanwhile, after starter Gavin handed off to Milner, he pitted just once again with 63 minutes to go. The # 4 team gambled on having enough fuel to finish. About 20 minutes later Milner advanced to third while Garcia was catching up on fresher tires.
As the race wound down the engineers had Garcia set up for a run on second place # 67 Ford GT of Michael Westbrook but time ran out and Milner went back around Garcia on the final lap.
All three moved up a place as the # 911 Porsche of Laurent Vanthoor ran out of gas just short of the finish.
Both Corvette teams solidified their chances to win the GTLM championship heading into the final three races of the season.
