Tyre pressure mysteries turn Saturday’s leaders into Sunday’s laggards

Pirelli replaced Yokohama as the tyre supplier for the ADAC-GT Masters Series.  On Friday Pirelli mounted and inflated their rubber with regular compressed air in ambient rain and 99% humidity.   Standard procedure, nothing wrong.  As it turned out, excessive moisture trapped in the air had a strange effect on the outcome.

On Saturday the 2 Callaway ZO6.R GT3 Corvettes fared pretty well finishing 3rd and 4th behind the 2 Sports Trophy Schubert Z4 GT3 BMWs.

On Sunday none of Saturday’s leaders finished higher than eighth.  It was evident the moisture coefficient created confusion about tyre pressures among the teams turning the results into a guessing game.  It makes one think about something from high school physics called Boyle’s Law.

We thank Callaway chief Ernst Woehr for the insight.

Callaway customer RWT team will return to the Series on Sept 19 & 20 at Zandvoort.
