In anticipation of a single GT class in 2010, Corvette Racing will test and develop the latest Corvette C6.R in the GT2 category in the final five rounds of the 2009 American Le Mans Series. In the 2009 season, the Corvette racing team was allowed to grandfather the old LS7.R block, de-stroked to 6.0-liters, since they were not running for points. For 2010, however, a new engine was required. A 5.5-liter production-based GM small-block V8 was developed and, in keeping with their environmental goals, Corvette Racing team continued with its commitment to green racing with the use of E85R ethanol racing fuel. The 2009 season had come to an end with a spectacular mix-em-up between the Corvette # 001 and a Porsche at Laguna Seca. Both cars suffered significant damage. Over the winter of 2009-10, two new chassis were constructed and the new "production" engines were installed. The two new cars went into service at Sebring and ran most races in the USA. For the 24 hours of Le Mans, the re-furbished chassis # 001 and 002 were shipped to France. The next race in the ALMS series was only one week after the famous Le Mans event and time would not permit the return of the two cars from France to the USA Registry ID Number: 952 View Original Size ![]() Richard Prince/ GM Racing press photos |
