In 1971 & 72, he registered for SCCA A/P club racing. The car was silver and ran as #15 AP. The SCCA logbook number was 007-036. Don sold it to Rick Mancuso at the end of 1972. Mancuso had the nose changed to resemble a brand new 73 and had it painted red. Mancuso registered his car as a brand new 73 Corvette and was issued a second log book with a new number (007-261). This is the car Rick drove at an IMSA race at Mid-Ohio where he first met John Greenwood. It was John Bishop of IMSA we believe that put Greenwood & Mancuso together sharing pit space. Mancuso sold the red coupe to A. Earle (Andy) Boone, who converted it to a roadster format in order to more easily install a full roll cage. Andy Boone registered his new roadster with the full roll cage in 1974 and was issued a third book and of course a new number (007-367). Boone`s log book number is still on the car but Mancuso can`t remember what happened to the book he got from Axtmann and Boone can`t remember what happened to the book he got from Mancuso. Boone now races a McLegal and a Gurney AAR Barracuda in vintage. Boone sold the car to Jerry Hansen and Craig Leifheit (this Hansen was a banker NOT the MN stock broker. The car was white with red & blue stripe running lengthwise on each side of the (top) fender, respectively. Hansen raced it one time crashing at Grattan (MI). Hansen sold it (all it needed was a nose) to a neighbor,( Rex Bretthauer), who raced it 8 times in 1980. He changed the paint to yellow and stored it in a barn on their farm for 20 years. Howard Nardick bought it and a huge pile of parts from Rex. Nardick recounts that when he bought it from Rex Bretthauer, Rex was in the process of moving and couldn`t find the log book(s) or any of his race results or photos. So, after waiting for some time, Howard called the Chicago region tech officer and he opened his book, It was all there. Donnie Axtmann had purchased a log book for $2 in 1971 and came back in 72 and paid another $2....yes they sold log books back then. Donnie’s book was number 007-036, the 36th car the Chicago region registered (007 being Chicago region), in 73. After selling most of the parts, the car sat for another 5 years. Howard reports that he still had both motors and a beautiful set of Jongbloed wheels...at this time he still has one motor and the wheels (which are for sale). Nardick sold the rolling chassis to Frank Edwards, who lives in St Petersburg (FL). Registry ID Number: 888 View Original Size Mark Windecker Photos |
