Generation: C6 Year: 2005 VIN: Race Numbers: 35 Ownership: Phoenix Performance Inc. / Joseph Aquilante Sponsors: Phoenix Racing; Hawk Brake Pads; Pirelli tires; Drivers: Andrew Aquilante; John Heinricy. Status: Original Color: black Tires/Wheels: Front: 11x18 with Pirelli P-Zero 275x35x18 Rear: 12x18 with Pirelli P-Zero 335x30x18 Engine: This immaculately-built car uses an SCCA T1 spec crate engine. It is the work of 20-yeaar-old Andrew Aquilatne. The car is a front-engine, rear-wheel drive, V8 5780 cc displacement (5.7 litre), 16 valves, 12:0:1 compression. Originally, the Grand-Am series specification was very close to that permitted in the SCCA World Challenge. The Grand-Am group did not allow the drive-by-wire system and limited internal engine modifications. Cars were “equalized” through a power-to-weight formula, with Covettes running at about 2800 lbs and generating up to 450 HP. Driveline: It is unclear whether the Phoenix Racing Team undertook any or all of the modifications permitted under Grand-Am rules. The Grand-Am rules permit some substitutions of parts provided they meet manufacturer specification. For example, in the early days of the series, the Powell-Weinberg cars ran a Rockland differential, featuring harder gears but retaining the GM limited slip features. Failures in the aluminum case for the transmission/differential were an early problem for Corvettes generating more than 500 HP. Top: Interior: Condition: fresh build for 2008 season URL: Unique Characteristics: Modifications: Phoenix Performance is the leading constructor of ASCCA t1 Corvettes. This car, purchased at auction in February 2008, is built closer to the original 2002 Grand-Am rules. Newwer rules permit lighter, more adjustable, tubeframe chassis but these are more expensive. This car is reflective of what can be accomplished with a lower-budget strategy. The car draws its strength from the full race cage and features the normal safety equipment which includes a driver seat and fire suppresion system, as per rules. Alternate approved bodywork permitted. Grand-Am does not permit ABS brake systems Alternate brake calilpers and pads were permitted, within overall Grand-Am spec Notes/Race History: The Phoenix Racing Team purchased this 2005 C6 at auction in February 2008. They converted it to racing for the 2008 season. It is lightly modified with a SCCA T1 crate engine, safety equipment, and series spec tires. In its maiden outing at Lime Rock park (CT), on May 25, 2008, it finished 12th in GT class after 3 horus of raicng. It was withdrawn prior to the Sahlen 6-Hour race at Watkins Glen on June 07, 2008 until it could be determined if further improvemenes could be made to this configuration for competition in the Rolex GT series. If not, the car can be readily converted for SCCA T1 club racing. Registry ID Number: 577 View Original Size ![]() Rich Martin |
