Engine: The normal production L98 engine (5.7 litre V8 rated at 245 HP) was replaced for the Corvette Challenge Series at Powell Development Americas’ Wixom, Michigan facility with a 300HP race engine. These motors were specifically built for the Challenge by the Flint engine plant and then tuned for equal performance by Specialized Vehicles, Inc. in Troy, Michigan. The sealed engines were owned by GM, leased to the teams for use during the race series and then replaced at the end of the Corvette Challenge season with the original factory-installed numbers-matching L98s. The sealed race engines were later made available to the race car owners. These race cars also featured a Desert Driveline 3” straight pipe dual exhaust with rear fascia mounted side outlets..

Unique Characteristics: Production: (29) cars were converted for racing. (27) cars raced at least (1) race. (10) cars raced all races.
Modifications: Challenge preparation was similar to the 1988 season, consisting of necessary safety equipment (roll cages, racing seats, and on-board fire extinguisher systems), adjustable Bilstein shocks and a set of four Dymag wheels and details like seats and safety belts installed at the Powell Development Inc. shops in Wixom (MI). All 1989 Corvette Challenge cars came with the Z51 Performance Handling Package, which included the new FX3 Selective Ride and Handling system, heavy-duty springs and stabilizer bars. Sixty Challenge cars came off the Bowling Green Corvette assembly line under option code R7F. There were twenty-nine that were converted to race trim, including two back-up cars. One additional car was configured as a show car by the design staff. The other thirty cars prepared under the R7F option code were sold as street legal cars.
