Unique Characteristics: 1 of 5 cars. Originally a coupe, but changed to a roadster
Modifications: Used in brake test at Sebring in February 1962 as a coupe then returned to Chevrolet in Michigan. Not until after Nassau December 63 were #003,#004 and #005 raced under the John Mecom banner did we see #002 appear. Duntov realized the frontal area of the coupe reduced top speed, so 001 and 002 were reconfigured as roadsters in late 1963 early 1964. 002 had never been seen outside of Chevrolet until 1964. Both 001 and 002 were sold to Penske in spring of 64 as roadsters. GS #001 was raced with a 427 L-88 as a Penske entry at Sebring 1966 driven by Dick Guldstrrand and Dr. Dick Thompson.
Notes/Race History: As GS-002, originally a coupe then converted to a Roadster in 1964 by Chevrolet. Sold to Roger Penske in summer 64. Roger never used the car and sold it to George Wintersteen in April 1966 after Sebring. George wanted to race SCCA - USRRC events and knew the newer Lola's and McLarens were too much money. George raced at Bridgehampton 5-66 with a 17th OA, 6th in class, Watkins Glen 6-66 and Mosport 6-66 with a 9th OA and sold the car to John Thorne. History between 1967 and 88 needs to be updated. Ed Mueller bought and restored the car and in 1989 the car appeared in Wintersteen trim of white / blue stripe. The car vintage raced at Watkins Glen in summer 1989 with Muller driving. Car was sold to Jim Jaegar in 1990 who had the car restored to 'factory original' frost blue using a reproduction body so if vintage raced the original body would be preserved. The white original body was placed in storage, but replaced in winter 2007 after a sale to RM Auction owner Rob Myers. RM Auctions and Restoration placed car in their Jan 16, 2009 auction in Arizona. Subsequently a deal was brokered to the Simeone Collection in Philadelphia (PA)...announced in December 2009.
